Yard sales for Humane Society prove Successful
Carberry News - Express, October 16, 2006
A third and final yard sale to raise much needed
money for the Humane Society was held this past September 29 & 30
in Carberry. $264.60 was raised over these
two days for a grand total to date of $749.46 for the 2006 season
going to this very worthwhile charity. 100% of all proceeds raised
went directly to this charity. Residents once again came out in support,
donating articles, time, and of course purchasing the many items up
for sale. Spokesperson Cheri Lelond said, "It is only with the strong
support our community of Carberry has shown, that makes events such
as these, the huge success as they are and it is truly, truly appreciated."

Brandon 10 Year Old Has Big Heart AND Generous Friends
Feb. 19, 2006
Recently Christine Schollenberg celebrated her 10th birthday by having a few friends over... and no presents. For the third year in a row, Christine's young guests were asked to bring donations for the Humane Society instead of gifts.
Christine dropped by with her parents to deliver an envelope containing $162 and a message written on the front: "For the dogs and cats". That is most certainly who will benefit from your kindness, Christine.
Thanks to all our young donors like Christine and her friends. Your unselfishness and caring for animals touches us deeply.
Humane Society VP Wins "Good Guy" Award
Feb. 6, 2006
Rick Dillabough, the Brandon Humane Society's Vice President and the marketing director for the Brandon Wheat Kings hockey team, has won this year's Dallas Beck "Good Guy" Award.
The award is given to a person who gives exceptional support to the media, and goes above and beyond the call of duty to sports media in Manitoba. Rick received the award at the 50th Annual Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Dinner in Winnipeg in January.
Everyone at the shelter always knew Rick was a good guy... now it's official! Congratulations, Rick.
Attention Dog Owners: Safe Chews
Dec. 19, 2005
If you have a dog who likes to chew things, take inventory of all your dog's toys to make sure they aren't potentially dangerous.
Recently, one of our shelter dogs ingested part of a toy that got lodged in his gastro-intestinal tract and had to be removed by emergency surgery.
He's okay now, but it points up the importance of screening your pet's toys. The Humane Society of the United States suggests:
- No toys that can be easily swallowed or lodged in the throat, such as small balls and other small items.
- No toys with parts that could come off such as ribbons, strings, eyes, jingle bells, etc.
- No toys stuffed with polystyrene beads or seeds.
- If your dog is a strong chewer, purchase chew toys specifically meant for them. Very hard rubber toys are safer and last longer.
- Ask your vet to recommend appropriate rawhide chews for your pet and always supervise when your pet is using them.
The HSUS recommends very durable chew toys like Nylabones and Kongs, also rope toys and tennis balls. Just be sure to throw away toys that are starting to fall apart or break into pieces.
(By the way, if you've been giving your dog Greenies, be sure to read this CNN report about the potential dangers of the popular dog chew.)
New Roof for Dog Runs
Dec. 10, 2005
In November, a new roof was installed over all the shelter's outdoor dog runs. In the past, these runs were completely exposed to the weather. Now, the dogs can step out of their indoor kennels and enjoy the fresh air without the rain, snow, and hot summer sun beating down on them.
It's a bonus for shelter volunteers, too, who won't have to shovel snow out of the runs this winter!
Kids "Get" Giving
Oct. 3, 2005
Over the summer, five kids from Brandon set up a lemonade stand to see how much money they could make. Did they use the profits to buy candy? CDs? Clothes? No, they donated it all to the Brandon Humane Society.
Chantel Lim, Danielle and Jordan Larocque, Tegan Keogh, and Taylor Woods showed up at our Open House on Oct. 1st to donate their hard-earned lemonade stand money. Thanks from all the pets and their people at the shelter!
PS: As our way of thanking these kids, we named five of our puppies after them: Chantel, Danielle, Jordan, Tegan and Taylor.
Backyard Super Dogs Show Helps the Shelter!
Oct. 3, 2005
On Sept. 3rd, Jennifer Hammond and her young friends from Boissevain held their own version of a Super Dogs show in Jennifer's backyard, much to the delight of friends and family. The kids and dogs performed jumping, fetching, relay races and other tricks for the audience.
The kids set up a donation table and decided to donate all funds raised to the Brandon Humane Society. What an awesome display of thoughtfulness and generosity!
Show participants included Jennifer and Alexa Hammond, their bichon cross Biscuit, Tina Trip and her dog Licorice, Stefanie Smith and her dog Jasper, Matthew McCorrister, and a special appearance by Norton the basset hound, dressed up as a clown. (Wish we could have seen that!)
This week, we also received a lovely donation from the Sunday school students of Knox United Church in Brandon.
Update: Oct. 16, 2005: 11-year-old pals Michaela Michaud-Smith and Leah Roberts of Brandon found an interesting way to fundraise for the shelter... they canvassed their neighborhood. The girls said they both love animals and were bored one day, so they raised some money for us in the most direct way they could think of -- by asking for it! Thanks for the $$$ and the cat food, ladies.
Frankly, we're a little choked up about all this. It's overwhelming to see all these young people throwing their hearts and their energies into helping out homeless pets. You make us (and your parents) really proud.
