Over the summer, five kids from Brandon set up a lemonade stand to see how much money they could make. Did they use the profits to buy candy? CDs? Clothes? No, they donated it all to the Brandon Humane Society.
Chantel Lim, Danielle and Jordan Larocque, Tegan Keogh, and Taylor Woods showed up at our Open House on Oct. 1st to donate their hard-earned lemonade stand money. Thanks from all the pets and their people at the shelter!
PS: As our way of thanking these kids, we named five of our puppies after them: Chantel, Danielle, Jordan, Tegan and Taylor.
On Sept. 3rd, Jennifer Hammond and her young friends from Boissevain held their own version of a Super Dogs show in Jennifer’s backyard, much to the delight of friends and family. The kids and dogs performed jumping, fetching, relay races and other tricks for the audience.
The kids set up a donation table and decided to donate all funds raised to the Brandon Humane Society. What an awesome display of thoughtfulness and generosity!
Show participants included Jennifer and Alexa Hammond, their bichon cross Biscuit, Tina Trip and her dog Licorice, Stefanie Smith and her dog Jasper, Matthew McCorrister, and a special appearance by Norton the basset hound, dressed up as a clown. (Wish we could have seen that!)
This week, we also received a lovely donation from the Sunday school students of Knox United Church in Brandon.
The Brandon Humane Society’s 4th Annual Wag-a-Tail Walkathon raised more money than ever before — just over $25,000. The previous record was set last year when the total was about $20,000. Perfect weather, more public involvement, and generous donors are getting the credit for this year’s success.
Shelter manager Tracy Munn says the sunny, warm weather and people’s growing awareness of the Walkathon contributed to a great turnout. At least 150 participants plus their families, friends and dogs (and even a goat!) came to the Riverside Discovery Centre Sunday morning to support their humane society by walking either two or five kilometres.
Afterwards, they enjoyed a free barbeque, dainties and refreshments along with members of the Brandon Wheat Kings and Willie the Wheaties’ mascot.
Of the total amount raised, $8,700 came from business sponsors and about $16,300 was from pledges collected by participants.
The Brandon Humane Society would like to thank everyone who helped with the Walkathon: the participants, the donors and business sponsors, the media who covered the event, the Wheat Kings organization, and the volunteers who worked so hard to plan, organize and carry out the many jobs associated with this year’s walk.
The money raised will help the Society continue its animal care and humane education programs.
