About The Brandon Humane Society

Our premises at 17th and Patricia, in South East Brandon.

The Brandon Humane Society has been in operation since 1946 when it was founded by Eleanor Kidd. She originally housed the shelter in her garage on 13th Street, then in an abandoned stable near Empress Bay, and later in an old barn near the riverbank where Eleanor Kidd Gardens are now located.

In 1997, the shelter moved to its new premises at 2200 17th Street East. These days, our residents - both cats and dogs - live in a comfortable building with heat and air conditioning, two large exercise yards, an enclosed cat patio, and enough kennels for 20 cats and 13 dogs. When our kennels are full, our dedicated volunteers foster animals in their own homes.

Since this is a no-kill shelter, the atmosphere is very positive... our animals are loved and well cared for as they wait to be adopted. We invite you to come visit us and see for yourself!

Our Mandate

The Brandon Humane Society's constitution states that the Society:

  • has the primary purpose of providing aid and assistance to companion animals,
  • will accept unwanted companion animals into the shelter when space is available,
  • will make every effort to find homes for animals in our care,
  • and will educate the public on companion animal needs, especially the importance of sterilization.

Staff and Volunteers

The shelter is run by our manager (Tracy Munn), assistant manager (Susan Carnegie), and about 75 volunteers who perform the care, grooming, socializing and exercising of the animals as well as clean up duties. They also organize and take part in shelter fundraising activities and special events.

Board of Directors

The shelter is governed by a 12-member volunteer board of directors. Each director serves a two year term with elections held every year for half of the positions. Learn more about our current board of directors here.

Hours of Operation

The shelter is open to the public Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm, and by appointment only on Sundays and evenings. To make an appointment or to get directions to the shelter, click here.
