Q1: We can't keep our pet due to allergies/moving/etc. Will you take our pet?

A: Since our shelter is usually full, we will put your pet on a waiting list to either come into the shelter when space allows or be matched up with a family in the community that is looking for a dog or cat. Please call the shelter to make these arrangements.

You may also send a picture and description of your pet to this website. We will add them to our Adoptable Pets in the Community page. Click here for instructions.

We also suggest you advertise your pet as widely as possible: newspaper ads, radio announcements, posters displayed at local vet clinics, pet supply stores, grocery stores, etc. In the meantime, try to isolate the animal from the allergic person to reduce the allergic reaction.

Q2: We are interested in a pet we saw in one of your store display photos. Is he/she still available and how can we get more information?

A: We have two pet photo displays in Brandon: one in the Wal-Mart and the other in the Brandon Shoppers Mall showcase near the Safeway store. If you spot a pet that interests you, there are two things you can do.

First, visit our Adoptable Pets web page to see if the pet you are interested in is listed and to learn more about him/her. Secondly, you may contact the shelter by phone at 728-1333 to see if the pet is still available for adoption or visit the shelter in person.

Q3: We've lost our pet. Can you help?

Call the shelter at 728-1333 to see if your pet has been turned in. If it hasn't, we suggest you call the pound or animal control officer (see phone numbers below). You can also try the many good suggestions in this article entitled, "How To Find A Lost Cat or Dog".

Q4: We've found a pet. What should we do?

A: First we suggest you speak to your neighbors to see if anyone is missing a pet or recognizes the animal. If the pet has a tattoo or a license tag, call us at 728-1333 or the nearest vet clinic and we/they can match you with the owner. A vet clinic can also scan the pet for a microchip and track its owner that way. If the pet has no identifying marks or tags, you may want to put a lost-and-found announcement on the radio and at area schools. You should also notify the pound or animal control officer for your municipality:

City of Brandon Pound: 728-3260
Brandon Animal Control Officer: 729-2346
RM of Cornwallis Animal Control Officer: 725-2019

Q5: I met a dog/cat at the shelter that I love. Can I put a hold on him?

A: If you are serious about one particular pet, we will be glad to "tag" him (put a hold on the pet) for a few days until you and your family can come in and get to know him. When an animal is tagged, it means you have the first opportunity to apply for his/her adoption, but you are not obligated to adopt nor are you guaranteed to be approved for adoption.

Q6: We want to adopt a dog but we don't have a fenced yard. What can we do?

A: If you live in a town or city and you don't have a fenced yard but meet all of our other adoption standards, we would encourage you to put up an enclosed dog run in the yard. This way the dog can still get fresh air without having to be tied up.

If you live in the country, a fenced yard isn't a requirement as long as you don't live near a busy road. However, our policy does require that any dog you adopt from us must be a house pet and be treated as a "member of the family". That doesn't mean they have to stay indoors all the time, but they should not be allowed to run loose constantly, be tied up in the yard, or housed in a barn, shed, porch or other outdoor situation.

Q7: Do you get purebred animals at the shelter?

A: Sometimes purebred pets do come to the shelter. You may check our Adoptable Pets page or phone us to inquire. If that doesn't work, we can put your name on our "waiting list" in case someone in the community wants to give up a purebred pet. You could also search Adopt an Animal - Canada to find a breed-specific rescue.

Q8: How can we find pet-friendly apartments in Brandon?

A: It isn't easy. But here's a place to start: Economic Development Brandon has a listing of rental properties on their website. The list does NOT show which buildings have vacancies, but it does specify which buildings do not accept pets. We were told that should mean that all the rest ARE pet-friendly. Here's the listing on the Economic Development website: PDF File of 2005 Brandon Rental Properties. Hope this helps a little.
